Alabama St. & Winston Salem St. are Unanimous #1 In Week – 6 Top-10 Polls Print E-mail

Hartly, DE – Alabama State and Winston Salem St. are unanimous number one selections in Week-6 HSRN’s Div. I FCS and Div. II Top-10 polls.

Each week during the 2011 season HSRN staff and writers, along with selected media representatives and SIDs, will rank Historical Black Colleges Division I FCS and NCAA Division II teams.

The FCS poll voting has Alabama State claiming all 22 first place votes after defeating defending SWAC Champ Texas Southern 43-29 last Saturday. Norfolk State extended their win streak to four with their 38-21 win over Delaware State and held on to number two. Jackson State whipped Arkansas Pine Bluff 48-10 and kept the number three spot along with S.C. State at number four after holding on to top upset minded N.C. Central 49-38. Hampton won their non-conference match over Princeton 28-23 and moved up from sixth to fifth. Alabama A&M moved to sixth from number eight with their 37-14 win over Mississippi Valley State and Prairie View move up to number seven after their 23-20 win over Southern. This is the fourth year of the HSRN Top-10 polls and for the first time in its history, N.C. A&T and Howard have a spot in the polls. N.C. A&T upset defending MEAC Co-Champs Bethune Cookman 22-3 and Howard shocked MEAC Co-Champ Florida A&M 29-28 and they are eighth and ninth respectively. Florida A&M dropped from number seven to 10th.

In Div. II action, Winston Salem St. is unanimous with 22 first place votes after their 35-28 win over St. Augustine’s. Morehouse knocked off Tuskegee 17-14 and moved up to two and the surprise of the SIAC, Stillman shutout Benedict 44-0 and moved to number three. Defending SIAC Champ Albany St. was shocked by Lane 26-24 and dropped from number two to number five. Elizabeth City State defeated Virginia Union 43-41 in three over times and moved up to number four. Kentucky State defeated Ft. Valley St. 25-24 and moved up from their number eight spot to number six. Langston is at number eight after their 41-23 win over Panhandle State and Lane is at number eight and moving into the top-10, at the 10th position is J.C. Smith after their 36-27 win over defending CIAA Champ Shaw.
