VUU Lady Panthers Streak Ends

We were sure that eventually, somebody would find a way to defeat the Virginia Union Lady Panthers. But we didn’tthink it would be this soon. The Lady Panthers were off to an unblemished 8-0 start to the 2018-19 basketball season, and have looked impressive as they carved up opponent after opponent.  but then a funny thing happened in Orangeburg, SC.  They ran into the Lady Panthers of Claflin, and fell by a 62-59 margin.

The leading lady for Claflin on Thursday night was Deja Dickens. She scored 24 points, including hitting 6 of 12 from deep.  The win was the second in a row for Claflin, and improved their overall mark to 6-4 on the season. Claflin has had their way with CIAA opponents this season; scoring victories over St. Aug, Shaw, Elizabeth City and now Virginia Union. However, Claflin has suffered defeats to Virginia State and Chowan.

Until the loss to Claflin, VUU was playing some of the best basketball in the country. The wins for VUU range from a 106-25 beat down of Cheyney University to a thin 69-66 victory over Benedict College. This is a team that seemed to be growing in confidence with every game.

Despite the defeat, VUU could be an extremely potent team come CIAA Tournament time, and they are capable of doing some damage in the post-season Division 2 Tournament as well.

The Lady Panthers are getting national recognition for their efforts as they were ranked 8th in the nation in the WBCA Coaches Poll. But clearly Claflin did not get the VUU memo.

The season is young. Stay tuned.
